| As the Wolves Howled |

Yellowstone NP in Wyoming - October, 1999 Slough Creek lends many different views and moods throughout each season. As winter approaches, different colors and patterns emerge in this landscape. I was struck by the fog wrapped around these solitary trees in the minutes prior to sunrise. The soft and rich earth tones of the grass and hills, combined with the distinct texture of the sagebrush, provides a deep tangible effect to the image. As I was setting up on this morning, I soon realized that I was not alone. I first heard a wolf howl to my left, then to my right, then in front of me; all seeming quite close. The Rose Creek pack concluded their calls in unison. It certainly was a chilling and inspiring feeling to know that I alone was sharing this beautiful scene with a species that so eloquently represents the meaning of wilderness. |
